During the 1986 People Power Revolution in the Philippines, a powerful moment unfolded when Sister Ocariza and 16 fellow nuns stood in prayer as military tanks advanced toward them on the streets. Positioned in pairs, they led the rosary while armed soldiers and tanks approached, their weapons aimed directly at the sisters. Sister Ocariza later described it as the most terrifying moment of her life. Believing they might be killed, she prayed, asking God to forgive her sins and those of the Filipino people, willing to offer their lives to prevent bloodshed. “Kill us, not the people,” she prayed, “because we don’t want violence. I love my country.

In a miraculous turn, the tanks came to a halt. Instead of attacking, the soldiers put down their weapons and joined the protesters in praying the rosary. Sister Ocariza sees this as divine intervention—God delivering the people from dictatorship and preventing a violent uprising. She recalls the moment as a lasting source of courage and a call to always stand up for what is right.

The Chicago Tribune described the scene with awe: “Instead of guns, there were prayers; instead of bloodshed, celebrations; instead of casualties, converts.” The peaceful uprising, in which “guns fell to rosaries,” became a symbol of faith overcoming fear, and nonviolence triumphing over tyranny—a moment now remembered as The Miracle of the Rosary.
