Padre Pio’s American Devotees and the Rosary
During the Second World War, many young American soldiers found themselves in the most dangerous battlefields of Europe and the Pacific. Among them were men who had received medals, Rosaries, or blessings from Padre Pio, the Capuchin friar in Italy known for his holiness and the stigmata. These soldiers testified that they were spared from certain death in circumstances where others perished, and they credited their protection to praying the Rosary daily and to Padre Pio’s intercession.
One American pilot recounted that after carrying a Rosary blessed by Padre Pio, his plane was struck yet he walked away unharmed, convinced Our Lady had protected him. Other veterans told how they clung to the beads in their pockets during battle and felt an unexplainable peace. After the war, many of these servicemen spread devotion to the Rosary throughout the United States, becoming living witnesses that Mary’s maternal protection, invoked through the Rosary, can reach even into the chaos of war.
