The Mothers of Lu: Prayer That Raised Priests
In the late 1800s, the village of Lu in Piedmont, Italy, was small and poor. Families worked hard to survive, and life was uncertain. In these conditions, a group of Catholic mothers made a serious and deliberate choice. They met regularly to pray the Rosary, committed themselves to weekly Eucharistic adoration, and on the first Sunday of each month offered Holy Communion for their children and for vocations to the priesthood and religious life. They did not pray for comfort or success. They prayed to give their children to God.
God answered their prayer in a powerful way. From this one small village came 323 religious vocations: 152 priests and religious brothers and 171 religious sisters, with some families offering more than one child. One prayer said by these mothers shows their faith and intention clearly: “O God, grant that one of my sons may become a priest. I myself want to live as a good Christian and to guide my children always to do what is right, so that I may receive the grace to be allowed to give You a holy priest. Amen.”
The Mothers of Lu remind us that when mothers pray the Rosary, adore Christ weekly, and offer Holy Communion in faith, God raises up shepherds for His Church—even from the poorest places.
