The homilies or sermons are geared to interpret and clarify as best we know the Gospel reading of the day. Some people can argue that the sermons can miss the mark of relating the here and now and the connection to the Old and the New Testaments. Are the sermons the only means of satisfying the human heart and soul as to what is taking place at Mass? Is this why we see no other reason to go to Mass?
We are in holy ground when we enter a church. God is everywhere. With silent prayer, adoration and thanksgiving, we feel His presence. We bring Him our joys and our struggles. We ask for the grace to do His will. We celebrate the Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist. The status quo in life is not always the same, and we want to hear the blissful things that make us smile and laugh. Jesus says “Be of happy heart”; “I am the resurrection and the life”; “Do this is remembrance of me”.
Whether a person enjoys a sermon or not does not change the fact that the real reason for attending Mass is to worship and adore God and to receive His Most Holy Body and Blood, and that should always be first and foremost within us. ~Anita Sapienza
