The devotion to the Holy Face of Jesus is a contemplative invitation to gaze with love upon the face of Christ, especially as revealed in His Passion, and to offer reparation for the sins and indifference of the world.
Saint John Paul II taught that the heart of Christianity is an encounter with the living face of the Savior, both radiant in glory and wounded in suffering. In consecrating the new millennium to the Face of Christ, he called the Church to rediscover this deep contemplation, learned most perfectly from the Virgin Mary, who first beheld and pondered her Son’s face.
Throughout history, saints have been drawn to this mystery of divine love. Saint Francis of Assisi so contemplated the crucified Lord that he was conformed to Him in the stigmata. Later witnesses, such as Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face, embraced lives of loving reparation before Christ’s suffering countenance.
To honor the Holy Face, then, is not merely to recall an image, but to enter into a transforming relationship that shapes the heart in mercy, compassion, and redeeming love. Come, contemplate with Mary the Face of Christ, crucified and risen. This contemplation is essential for every Christian and for the Church’s mission in the world.
