Matt Talbot: Kept Faithful by the Rosary

Venerable Matt Talbot was born in Dublin in 1856 into a poor family where drinking was common, and he himself fell into alcoholism at a young age. At 28, after years of humiliation and dependence, he resolved to give up drinking and return to God. The struggle was long and severe, but Matt clung to daily Mass and the Holy Rosary, placing himself under the care of the Blessed Virgin Mary and persevering one day at a time.

For the next forty years, Matt lived a hidden life shaped by the Rosary, penance, and simplicity. He joined the Third Order of St. Francis and practiced quiet mortification, including wearing penitential chains beneath his clothing, known only after his death. When Matt Talbot collapsed in 1925 while walking to early morning Mass, he was carrying his rosary, a final sign of the prayer through which Our Lady had sustained his fidelity.

Today, pilgrims continue to pray at his shrine in Dublin, seeking the same perseverance and sobriety that marked his life.
