Our Lady of Peace: A Miraculous Rosary in San Miguel

In 1682, a mysterious wooden box washed ashore near El Salvador’s Gulf of Fonseca. Fishermen carried it to San Miguel, and as the donkey transporting it approached the church doors, it knelt and refused to move. When the box was opened, inside was a carved image of Mary holding the Christ Child. At once, a long-standing conflict in the area ceased, and the image was honored as Our Lady of Peace.

Over a century later, in 1787, the Chaparrastique volcano threatened to destroy San Miguel. The townspeople carried the statue in procession, praying the Rosary with faith as the sky filled with ash. To the amazement of all, the lava changed course and the city was spared. A white palm-shaped cloud formed above the crater, and in thanksgiving the people placed a golden palm in Mary’s hand. From that time forward, Our Lady of Peace became the patroness of El Salvador and a sign of the Rosary’s power to bring protection and peace.
