Our Lady of the Rosary Protects Lima
In the sixteenth century, during the early days of the Church in Peru, the Dominican friars in Lima prayed daily before a beloved statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary under the title Our Lady of the Rosary — a gift from Emperor Charles V of Spain. During one of Lima’s devastating earthquakes, the ground shook so violently that people fled in fear. Among them was St. John Macías, a humble Dominican lay brother. As he ran from the church, he suddenly heard a gentle, maternal voice from the statue: “Brother John, where are you going?” Startled, he replied, “My Lady, I am running for safety!” The voice answered, “Come back, my son — am I not here with you?” Trusting her words, he returned and knelt before the image with the other friars to pray the Rosary, and those who stayed within the church were spared from harm.
From that day forward, Peruvians have remembered the Virgin’s protection as a sign of Mary’s care for all who cling to her through the Rosary. Even now, the faithful in Lima’s Dominican basilica continue to honor Our Lady of the Rosary as “Protectress of the City,” praying her beads with confidence that she stands beside them in every trembling of life.
