Saint John Ogilvie’s Rosary and a Conversion
Saint John Ogilvie, a Jesuit priest, was executed in Glasgow in 1615 for refusing to deny the Catholic faith. As he stood on the scaffold before the crowd, he boldly professed Christ and the authority of the Church. In a final act of devotion, he drew forth his rosary and flung it into the crowd. According to tradition, the beads struck Baron John ab Eckersdorff, a nobleman who had come as an onlooker. The encounter left a mark upon his soul, and in time it led him to embrace the Catholic faith.
This story, preserved in Scottish Catholic memory, highlights how even in martyrdom the Rosary became a channel of grace. Ogilvie’s sacrifice bore fruit beyond his death, showing that Our Lady can use the simplest gesture of devotion to inspire conversion. His witness reminds us that when we hold fast to the Rosary with courage, God’s grace can reach hearts in ways we least expect.
