St. Francis’ Prayer before the Crucifix

by St. Francis of Assisi

Saint Francis’ process of conversion was a lengthy one. His primary concern was to discern the will of God—to know what the Most High was asking of him and to determine the path he ought to take—and to this end, he turned to prayer.

One day, in the church of San Damiano, he began to pray fervently before the image of the Crucified One, who, with piety and benevolence, spoke to him thus: “Francis, go and repair my house, which, as you see, is falling completely into ruin.

The majority of manuscript accounts state that it was at that moment that Francis recited this prayer in response to the command he had just received.

“Most High glorious God, enlighten the darkness of my heart.
Give me right faith, sure hope and perfect charity.
Fill me with understanding and knowledge that I may fulfill your command.”
